Phuket to Ko Lipe: A 12-Day Andaman Route

The Andaman coast has reopened for its main travel season, making late 2026 a natural time to link Phuket, Phang Nga, Krabi, Trang and Satun. A good route takes 10 to 12 days and moves south without constant backtracking. The goal is not to collect islands, but to give each coastal landscape enough time.

Days one and two

Begin in Phuket and recover from the journey before committing to boats. Use the first day for Phuket Old Town, a beach or a quiet meal, then take a Phi Phi area trip only if weather and sea conditions are suitable. Maya Bay reopened on 1 October, but access rules and daily conditions still matter.

Book through a licensed operator that explains pickup, insurance, park fees and cancellation terms. A cheap headline price can exclude transfers or national-park admission.

Days three to five

Travel north to Khao Lak for a Similan or Surin day trip, then reserve another day for Phang Nga Bay. The Similan Islands reopened on 15 October after the monsoon closure. Electronic national-park tickets are now used at several marine parks, so carry passport details and follow the operator’s purchase instructions.

Choose one major offshore day rather than two consecutive speedboat trips. Sea time is tiring, and a spare day protects the itinerary when waves or rain disrupt departures.

Days six and seven

Move south to Krabi and base yourself near Ao Nang or Railay. Railay offers limestone scenery, beaches and climbing, while Ao Nang provides easier road access and a wider choice of operators. Decide whether you value atmosphere or logistics more.

A four-island trip is not compulsory after the Similans. Consider kayaking, a climbing session or a slower beach day so the route develops variety instead of repeating boat transfers.

Days eight and nine

Continue into Trang for quieter island time. Ko Muk and Ko Kradan are practical bases for swimming and local boat trips, while the Emerald Cave is highly dependent on tide, sea state and crowd management. Follow guides and never attempt cave access in unsafe conditions.

Trang rewards a slower schedule. Ferry connections can be less frequent than Phuket routes, so confirm the next leg before checking out and keep cash for smaller transfers.

Days ten to twelve

Finish in Satun and Ko Lipe, with Tarutao National Park as the wider landscape. Ko Lipe is compact and popular, while the surrounding waters offer snorkelling and access to less developed islands. Two or three nights give weather flexibility and make the long southbound journey worthwhile.

Book the final onward connection before arrival. If flying from Hat Yai or Langkawi, keep generous time between boat and flight because sea delays do not respect airline check-in deadlines.

Season and impact

October and early November can still bring showers and rough water. The more settled dry season generally comes later, while December and January fill quickly. Build at least one flexible night into the route and monitor official park or operator updates.

Use reef-safe sunscreen, avoid standing on coral and keep distance from wildlife. Electronic tickets and seasonal closures are not administrative annoyances; they are tools for managing fragile marine areas. A strong Andaman trip leaves room for the sea to set the pace.

Make the visit work

Pack lighter than you would for a single-resort holiday. Ferries may involve beach landings, narrow piers and staff moving bags quickly between boats. A medium soft-sided bag is easier than an oversized hard case, while a small waterproof pouch should hold passports, phones and medication. Keep one dry set of clothes accessible and label luggage with a working contact number.

Do not book every transfer from an unverified social account. Use established operators, official park information and accommodations that can confirm the correct pier. Read whether a ticket includes hotel pickup, long-tail transfer, terminal fees or national-park admission. On multi-leg days, photograph tickets and write down the operator’s local number before leaving Wi-Fi coverage.

The route can also be shortened without losing its logic. Travellers with eight days might choose Phuket, Khao Lak and Krabi, or fly into Phuket and finish in Trang without continuing to Ko Lipe. The best itinerary is not the longest one. It is the one that keeps enough margin for weather, sleep and a beach afternoon that does not need to become another excursion.

Before setting out, check the subject’s official page for any same-day change to opening times, access, reservations or weather-dependent activity. Bangkok traffic and island transport can turn a small delay into a missed slot, while restaurants, exhibitions and resorts may adjust operations for private events. Save the address in Thai and English, keep the booking confirmation available offline and share the return plan with everyone in the group.

One final habit improves almost every experience: decide what would make the visit worthwhile before arriving. It might be one dish, one artwork, a well-fitted pair of shoes, a safe activity or a connection that runs without stress. That priority makes it easier to skip distractions, adapt when conditions change and leave with a stronger memory than a longer checklist.
