Muse Beyond Human exhibition installation at Dib26 Bangkok
Muse: Beyond Human brings modern and contemporary approaches to portraiture into one short-run exhibition.

Muse: Beyond Human is open at Dib26 from 27 to 30 October 2026, giving Bangkok four days to see works by Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse alongside contemporary artists. Admission is free, and the venue is at 59/44 Sukhumvit 26 in Khlong Toei.

The exhibition is more useful when approached as a conversation about portraiture than as a two-name checklist. It asks what happens when an artist transforms a real person through memory, art history, style and imagination.

Start With the Two Anchors

Picasso’s Nu couche et musicien from 1967 places a reclining nude beside a musician in Baroque-inspired dress. The shifting viewpoints and assertive brushwork show why a portrait can be less about recording a face than rebuilding a visual world. Give the composition time before moving on to the label.

Matisse’s Femme en costume oriental from 1920 uses a striped gandoura and expressive colour to reshape the sitter. Stand far enough away to see the overall balance, then move closer for the lines and surfaces. The contrast with Picasso helps visitors recognise how different modern artists dismantled straightforward likeness.

Look Beyond the Headliners

The contemporary line-up includes Natee Utarit, Kosit Juntaratip, Peihang Benoit, Joyce Pensato, Dana Schutz and Ixima Kuniyosi. These works keep the exhibition from becoming a historical display. Each artist brings another way of borrowing, distorting or reframing the human figure.

Natee Utarit’s references to earlier European painting are particularly useful for the exhibition’s theme. Rather than looking for direct imitation, notice how an image can carry traces of Titian, sculpture or another artist’s language while becoming something new.

Use a Slow Viewing Order

A four-day show can attract concentrated crowds. Begin with one full circuit to understand the room, then return to three works. Reading every label in sequence can create congestion and flatten the visual differences that make the exhibition worthwhile.

If the room is busy, step away from the two headline works and spend time with a contemporary piece. The central question becomes clearer when the older and newer approaches are compared rather than ranked.

Join the Final-Day Discussion

The 30 October discussion runs from 5pm to 7pm with Cristian Albu of Christie’s Asia Pacific, Dib Bangkok director Dr Miwako Tezuka and curator Ariana Chaivaranon. It is designed to extend the exhibition into a conversation about modern and contemporary art.

Arrive early if the discussion is a priority and confirm whether registration is required. A final-day programme may draw a different crowd from a weekday gallery visit, so leave time for both the exhibition and the talk rather than trying to enter at the last minute.

Reach Dib26 Smoothly

Dib26 is on Sukhumvit 26, with Phrom Phong the nearest major BTS area. The soi is walkable for some visitors but can feel longer in midday heat. A short ride from the station may be easier for families, older visitors or anyone arriving dressed for an evening programme.

Use the full street number and venue name. Sukhumvit 26 contains many restaurants and event spaces, and a generic soi pin is not precise enough. Confirm photography rules at the entrance and keep a respectful distance from artworks and other visitors.

Make It Work

Because the run ends on 30 October, postponing the visit carries a real risk of missing it. Choose a daytime slot for quieter viewing or the final evening if the expert discussion is the main draw. Families can turn the visit into a simple looking exercise: compare how two artists use colour, pose or distortion, then let each person choose one work to discuss. That approach is more engaging than trying to explain every period or name at once.

Free admission does not make the work disposable. Give the exhibition at least an hour, choose a few works for close attention and let the conversation between generations do the heavy lifting. Keep phones silent, avoid blocking a work for a long photograph and follow any restrictions on close-up images. If the room becomes crowded, step back and return rather than pushing through a cluster around Picasso or Matisse.
