SEC Check First Guide: Verify Before You Invest In Thailand

Thai SEC warning about common investment scam signs
The Thai SEC recommends checking sellers and products before any transfer.

A polished profile, copied logo and confident video call do not prove that an investment seller is licensed in Thailand. SEC Check First is a free tool from the Securities and Exchange Commission for checking people, companies and capital-market products before making a decision. Its current version also surfaces recent Investor Alert entries and provides routes for reporting suspected fraud.

Use the app or the SEC website before transferring money, sharing passport copies or installing remote-access software. A search result is a starting point, not a guarantee of profit or suitability. The goal is to establish that the exact person, entity and product are authorised, then decide separately whether the investment makes financial sense.

Pause The Conversation

Scammers create urgency because verification becomes harder under pressure. Stop if a contact demands payment today, promises guaranteed high returns, claims a limited private allocation or asks you to keep the opportunity secret. Save the name, phone number, account, website and messages without clicking new links. A legitimate licensed professional should tolerate an independent check through a channel you found yourself.

Urgency, guaranteed returns and borrowed logos are reasons to stop and verify.

Search The Exact Name

Enter the full legal name of the person, company or product in SEC Check First or License Check. Try Thai and English spellings where relevant. Similar names are not evidence. Match the license category, employer, status and contact details with the pitch. Someone may be licensed for one activity but not authorised to sell the product being offered.

A familiar company name is not enough; the person, license and payment account must match.

Open Investor Alert

Search the Investor Alert database for the claimed name, website, social profile and other identifiers. The latest-alert feature makes recent entries easier to see, but absence from the list does not prove safety. New scams appear before a regulator can publish them. Treat a positive alert as a stop sign and a blank result as permission to continue checking, not permission to invest.

Complicated or fashionable assets can be used to hide a weak or fraudulent proposition.

Verify The Payment Account

Never transfer money simply because a bank account name resembles the brand. Ask the licensed firm, through the phone number on its official record, which account receives client funds. Personal accounts, unrelated companies, cryptocurrency wallets and repeated changes are serious warnings. A scammer may impersonate a real firm while substituting a false account, so license and payment checks must be connected.

Inspect The Communication

Compare the email domain, website spelling and phone number with the regulator and firm’s own channels. Look for extra letters, unusual subdomains and messaging-only support. Do not install screen-sharing software or let a caller guide banking actions. Reverse-image searching a profile photograph can uncover impersonation, but it does not replace regulatory verification because criminals also use new or stolen images.

Protect Your Documents

Passport scans, bank statements and selfies can be reused for identity fraud. Provide them only after verifying the receiving entity, purpose, retention policy and secure upload route. Add a clear watermark stating the intended company and purpose when appropriate. If documents were already sent to a suspicious contact, alert the relevant bank and monitor accounts rather than waiting for a financial loss.

Report Quickly

Thailand’s SEC accepts investment-scam reports through its scam alert channel and the SEC Help Center at 1207, press 22 for the investment-scam route cited in its 2026 notice. Preserve transaction receipts, chats, usernames, URLs and account numbers. Contact the bank immediately if money moved. Fast reporting can support account tracing, but recovery is never guaranteed.

Separate Safety From Quality

A licensed seller can still offer a product that is expensive, volatile or unsuitable. After identity and authorisation are verified, read fees, liquidity, risk, currency exposure and exit conditions. Ask who holds assets and how valuations are produced. Do not treat a regulator search as an endorsement. Verification keeps obvious impersonation out; ordinary investment analysis must still follow.
