Koh Rok is a pair of forested islands in Mu Ko Lanta National Park, known for a narrow channel of clear water, pale sand and reef snorkelling. Koh Rok Nai and Koh Rok Nok sit far enough from the mainland for the journey to feel like a proper marine excursion. That distance is also the main planning issue. Sea state, departure point and boat type matter more than a glossy itinerary, and the right choice can differ for confident swimmers, young children and anyone prone to motion sickness.

Choose the departure

Koh Lanta is usually the most efficient base, with speedboat pickups arranged by local operators. Departures from Ao Nang, Krabi mainland or Phuket can involve longer transfers or combination routes. Compare actual pier-to-island time rather than hotel pickup time alone. Ask how many stops the boat makes, whether the return uses the same route and what happens if weather prevents landing.

Check the season

TAT notes that smaller islands around Mu Ko Lanta are typically closed during the southwest monsoon from May through October. The Department of National Parks announced the 2026 Andaman marine season opening from 15 October, but a broad seasonal announcement does not guarantee every site is open every day. Confirm Koh Rok status, wind, waves and park instructions with a licensed operator immediately before travel.

Understand the two islands

The two main islands face each other across a shallow channel of roughly 250 metres. White-sand beaches and clear water make the setting photogenic, while reef areas support snorkelling. Landing points and swim zones can change with tide and park management. Follow crew and ranger instructions rather than swimming toward whichever patch of water looks quietest from the beach.

Choose the operator

A low price is not enough for an exposed marine route. Ask for the operator’s licence, insurance, boat capacity, life-jacket sizes, emergency equipment and guide-to-guest ratio. Confirm whether masks, snorkels, fins, lunch, drinking water and park fees are included. Families should ask about child flotation, shade and toilet access. A responsible company will answer clearly without pressuring immediate payment.

Snorkel conservatively

Wear the life jacket unless the guide explicitly approves another flotation setup, and keep fins away from coral. Do not stand on reef, chase wildlife or take shells. Beginners should stay close to a guide and practise breathing before entering deeper water. If current, visibility or fatigue changes, return to the boat or beach. A short, comfortable session is safer and more enjoyable than forcing the full stop.

Pack for exposure

Bring reef-safe sun protection, a rash guard, hat, refillable water bottle, dry bag and motion-sickness plan agreed with a pharmacist or doctor. Keep a light towel and dry layer for the ride home. Waterproof phone cases can fail, so back up important documents and avoid carrying valuables. Shoes that can handle hot sand and wet boat steps are more useful than fashion sandals.

Treat fees carefully

Koh Rok is inside a national park, so entrance charges or conservation fees may apply and can differ by nationality and age. Ask the operator for the current official amount and whether it is collected separately. Request a receipt where available. Do not rely on an old blog or booking screenshot because national-park pricing and collection methods can change.

Keep a weather exit

A reputable operator may cancel even when the sky near the hotel looks bright. Offshore conditions can be different, and marine warnings should override a prepaid plan. Read cancellation, refund and rescheduling terms before booking. Leave another day available if Koh Rok is a trip priority. Never pressure crew to depart against a safety decision.

Plan your next stop

Quick questions

When is Koh Rok usually accessible? The smaller Mu Ko Lanta islands are typically closed during the monsoon months from May through October, with exact dates and daily status set by authorities.

Are park fees included in tours? Some operators include them and others collect them separately. Confirm the current official amount before booking.

Koh Rok can deliver the clear-water island day people imagine when planning Krabi, but it is not guaranteed by a photograph or calendar date. Start from the most sensible base, choose a transparent operator and accept that weather and park management have the final word. Protecting the reef and returning safely matter more than completing every advertised stop.

Decide who should skip it

A long speedboat ride may be unsuitable for travellers with recent surgery, serious back or neck problems, certain pregnancies, uncontrolled medical conditions or severe motion sensitivity. Operator rules vary, and a booking agent is not a substitute for medical advice. Older travellers and families should ask about boarding ladders, beach landings and the distance to shade or toilets. People who do not want to snorkel can still enjoy the beach, but they should confirm that the itinerary allows a comfortable waiting area. Choosing a calmer mainland or near-shore day is not a failed holiday. It can be the wiser decision when the route or forecast does not fit the group.
