Khao Sok National Park is the Southern Thailand trip to choose when you want jungle, limestone cliffs and freshwater lake scenery instead of another beach. It sits in Surat Thani province, between the travel circuits of Phuket, Khao Lak, Krabi and Koh Samui, and it offers one of the most dramatic non-island landscapes in the country. The headline image is Cheow Lan Lake, where long-tail boats move between limestone towers and floating raft houses. The other side of the park is Khao Sok village, where travellers base themselves for trails, river activities, waterfalls and easier budget accommodation.

This split is the first thing to understand. Khao Sok is not one compact attraction. Thai National Parks notes that the headquarters area and Cheow Lan Lake are about 67 km apart, roughly one hour by road. If you book a hotel in Khao Sok village, you are not automatically on the lake. If you book a floating raft house, you are committing to a boat-access lake experience with fewer shops, less flexibility and much better scenery.
Cheow Lan Lake

Cheow Lan Lake is the main reason many travellers come. It was created by Ratchaprapha Dam and is now known for emerald water, karst cliffs, caves, viewpoints and raft-house stays. The lake is best experienced by boat, usually as a day trip or overnight package. A day trip gives you the scenery and perhaps a short cave or viewpoint stop. An overnight stay gives you the quieter hours after day boats leave, sunrise on the water and a stronger sense of being inside the landscape.
Book ahead. Thai National Parks notes that boat availability issues continue into early 2026 and recommends arranging boats in advance through a tour operator or raft house rather than trying to organise one on arrival. This is especially important in high season, during Thai holidays and for travellers with fixed onward transport.
Khao Sok Village

Khao Sok village is the practical base for travellers who want more control over budget, food and activities. The headquarters area is where you can access trails, waterfalls, river activities and local guesthouses. Mobile reception and Wi-Fi are generally better around the village than on the lake. This side is better for backpackers, families who do not want to sleep on a raft house, and travellers who prefer to choose day activities one at a time.
The village is also the better base if weather is uncertain. In heavy rain, lake activities can become less appealing, while village-based travellers can adjust plans more easily.
Fees and Opening Hours
Fees change, so always check again before travelling. Thai National Parks currently lists foreign visitor fees at 200 THB for adults and 100 THB for children at the headquarters area, and 300 THB for adults and 150 THB for children at Cheow Lan Lake. Thai citizens pay 40 THB for adults and 20 THB for children. The park is listed as open from 6 am to 6 pm daily. Boats are not allowed on the lake before sunrise or after sunset.
These details matter for itinerary planning. If you are staying on the lake, your raft-house package may handle fees separately or ask you to pay at the pier. Confirm what is included before comparing prices.
Best Time To Go
The dry season from roughly January to March is the easiest window for scenery, hiking and boat comfort. Late April into early December brings the rainy season, with heavier rainfall from May to October. Rain does not make Khao Sok impossible, and the rainforest can be beautiful in wet weather, but trails become slippery and boat plans can be less predictable. If you are combining Khao Sok with islands, build in buffer time.
Who Should Go
Khao Sok suits travellers who want nature, photography, kayaking, boat scenery and a break from beach resorts. It is excellent for couples, families with older children, soft-adventure travellers and anyone moving between Phuket/Khao Lak and Surat Thani/Koh Samui. It is less suitable for nightlife seekers, luxury shoppers or visitors who need constant air-conditioning and urban convenience.
Choosing Between Day Trip and Overnight
A day trip to Cheow Lan Lake is enough for the postcard view, but it is not the best version of Khao Sok. The lake is most atmospheric early and late, when day boats are gone and the cliffs reflect in calmer water. If budget and time allow, one night on a raft house is the better recommendation. Choose a higher-end raft house if you need air-conditioning, more reliable electricity or better food; choose a basic raft house only if you are comfortable with simple conditions.
Village-only stays are a different kind of trip. They are cheaper, easier and better for flexible activities, but they do not deliver the same lake immersion. A good two-night plan is one night in Khao Sok village and one night on Cheow Lan Lake, with transport arranged between the two.
What To Pack
Pack for wet jungle conditions even in the dry season. Bring quick-dry clothes, sandals or shoes that can get wet, mosquito repellent, a dry bag, a light rain shell, swimwear, sunscreen and a power bank. If staying on the lake, assume electricity may be limited unless the property confirms otherwise. Bring any medicine you need because lake raft houses are not close to pharmacies.
For photography, protect cameras from spray and rain. The lake is beautiful, but long-tail boats can get wet. Drone use should not be assumed inside a national park. Ask the park, tour operator and raft house before flying anything.
Responsible Travel Notes
Khao Sok is a protected area, not a theme park. Do not feed wildlife, play loud music on boats, leave rubbish, carve names into raft houses or buy tours that include unethical wildlife contact. Keep expectations realistic: wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, and the best experiences often come from quiet observation rather than chasing animals.
Choose operators who explain park rules, manage waste properly and avoid overcrowded itineraries. If a tour promises too much in too little time, it may be cutting corners.
Sample Two-Day Plan
Day one: arrive at Surat Thani, Phuket, Krabi or Khao Lak; transfer to Khao Sok village or directly to Ratchaprapha Pier; take a long-tail boat onto Cheow Lan Lake; check into a raft house; swim or kayak; join a sunset boat ride if offered. Day two: sunrise boat ride, breakfast, cave or viewpoint excursion depending on conditions, then return to the pier and continue to Surat Thani, Khao Lak, Phuket or Krabi.
Add a third day if you want village trails and river activities without rushing. Travellers connecting to Koh Samui or Koh Phangan should leave a buffer because road, boat and ferry timings can stack up.
