Use The Three Fifths Rule
A genuine note with at least three-fifths of its original area remaining can be exchanged immediately at full face value when verification is clear. The threshold is about the physical note, not how visually unpleasant it looks. Bring the whole note and any detached pieces. Staff decide whether immediate exchange is possible; a customer estimate made at home does not bind the bank.
Understand Half Notes
A note divided vertically around the middle is treated as a half note and can be redeemed at half value. This rule prevents two halves of one note from both receiving full value. If both pieces are available, keep them together without permanently altering them. Do not tape over serial numbers or security features. Place pieces flat in a transparent sleeve or envelope for transport.
Handle Mismatched Notes
A mismatched note contains pieces from another banknote. The Bank of Thailand says a note made from no more than two mismatched pieces of the same denomination may receive normal value, subject to assessment. Do not try to improve a damaged note by combining unrelated scraps. Present exactly what you received and explain how the damage occurred if asked. Deliberate alteration can complicate verification.
Submit A Claim
Cases below the immediate-exchange threshold or requiring specialist verification need a damaged-banknote claim form. Obtain the form from the bank, submit the note and provide the bank account requested for reimbursement. The Bank of Thailand determines the final value. Complex examinations can take up to 60 days after the claim form is received, although straightforward forwarded cases are often resolved sooner.
Choose A Service Point
Government Savings Bank is the most flexible nationwide option because damaged notes can be submitted on working days. Commercial banks handle them on Wednesdays, but mall branches are excluded. The monthly Banknote Clinic is useful for direct Bangkok guidance. Call first if the note is badly burned, contaminated or part of an insurance or police case, because safe handling and documentation may differ.
Protect The Evidence
Store fragments dry and flat. If the note is wet, allow it to air-dry without heat and keep pieces from blowing away. For burned notes, avoid separating brittle layers. Photograph the condition for your own record, but the image is not a substitute for the original. Do not post clear serial numbers online. Carry identification and a bankbook or account details if the claim route requires transfer.
Avoid Currency Confusion
The service concerns Thai baht banknotes, not foreign currency exchange. The Bank of Thailand does not exchange foreign cash for travellers. For an old but intact Thai note, ask a commercial bank whether it remains legal tender or can be swapped. Collectable value is a separate question from face-value redemption, and the exchange counter does not appraise rare notes for private sale.
